Sustainable Livelihood

Sustainability In Focus

Sustainable livelihoods for local residents involves creating opportunities for income generation and economic growth that are harmonious with the Sanctuary's conservation goals. Through initiatives such as eco-friendly tourism and responsible agriculture, the community aims to support its members while safeguarding the unique environment and wildlife of the sanctuary.  By fostering sustainable livelihoods, the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary CREMA strives to create a win-win scenario where both people and nature thrive together. For instance, the Shea butter enterprise in WCHS CREMA plays a significant role in the community's sustainable development. Local residents engage in the production of Shea butter, a versatile and valuable natural product derived from Shea nuts. This enterprise not only provides a source of income for many households but also contributes to the preservation of traditional knowledge and skills. By promoting fair trade practices and environmentally friendly production methods, the Shea butter enterprise not only supports the economic well-being of the community but also underscores the importance of responsible resource management. It stands as a prime example of how local entrepreneurship can empower individuals, especially women, while fostering conservation and sustainable livelihoods within the Sanctuary.

The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary CREMA is fully committed to these areas of focus, working diligently and collaboratively to ensure the sustainable management and protection of its unique wildlife and ecosystems.
