Welcome to WCHS Hippo Sanctuary, located in WA in the Upper West Region of Ghana. We are dedicated to protecting and conserving the hippopotamus population in the area, and promoting eco-tourism for the local community. Getting to Wechiau
The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary Is located in the Upper West Region of Ghana.
The garteway to the protected area is the community of Wechiau, approximately 50 kilometres (30miles) west of Wa, the region’s capital. You can reach us by public transportation (trotor or the yellow Cambou) from Wa. There are three routes to Wechiau from Wa;
· Wa – Ga – Wechiau: 57km/36 miles (Wa to Ga is tarred)
· Wa – Vieri – Wechiau: 44km/27 miles
· Wa – Dorimon – Wechiau: 47km/29miles
Travel Within the Sanctuary
The visitors Centre is located in the community of Wechiau. This is where you collect your tour guide and make arrangement for your activities. Travel options include:

Have us arrange a motorking or Yellow cambou to drop you off and pick up again at a pre-arranged time, either the same day or following days. These are ideal groups.

Tourist are advised to prepare adequately in terms of food, water and other essentials before heading out to different sections of the Sanctuary. We have mini shops in Wechiau one can purchase some food items from.
